RSS, or Really Simple Syndication as it is commonly known, is a technology that gives webmasters the ability to easily distribute and publish syndicated content on the Internet. It seems like all Internet businesses now have RSS feeds available; at least your competitors do. You have finally made the decision that you have to have one. Where do you start?

Steps to Creating an RSS feed

1.) Build a Feed

There are a number of desktop and web applications available that make feed creation easy. I would encourage anyone creating a feed to use one. Though not overly complicated, hand-coding an RSS feed can become a bit confusing and time-consuming. Most desktop software applications for building a feed include a wizard and contact-sensitive help, simplifying the process of creating a feed. Following a few simple steps in a wizard generally will produce an RSS feed in just a few minutes.

Publishers control what information is syndicated in the RSS feed, so ultimately it is the publisher’s decision as to whether to include teaser copy or full articles. Consider what you are trying to accomplish and who your target audience is when building the feed.

Software to Build a Feed – http://www.feedforall.com

Tutorial for Creating Feed by Hand using XML – http://www.make-rss-feeds.com

2.) Transfer the Feed Onto Your Server

Once you have constructed an RSS feed you will need to transfer the feed to your server. This can be done using a standard FTP client (if it is not built into the feed creation software). The feed is usually placed in the domain’s root directory like this: http://www.mydomain.com/nameoffeed.xml , but as long as you know where it is it doesn’t really matter.

3.) Display the Feed on Your Website Using a Graphic of Some Sort

In order to signal to website visitors that an RSS feed containing content related to the website is available, include a colorful graphic on the website. It has become a standard that nearly all websites that have RSS feeds available use colorful graphics such as flags as indicators that RSS feeds are available for specific content. The flags were initially bright orange rectangles but as the popularity has grown, webmasters have bent the rules a bit. NotePage has made a free online RSS graphic tool available that allows users to quickly customize buttons by selecting the text on the button and the color scheme of the button. Once the color and text is entered, a custom graphic is instantly created. Webmasters can easily match the style of the RSS button to a website’s theme. Graphics experience is not required. Simply select alternative colors and insert text to personalize RSS feed graphics. The RSS graphics tool can be used by clicking the following URL http://www.feedforall.com/public/rss-graphic-tool.htm or choose ready made graphics fom: http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-graphics.htm .

4.) Include Information in the HTML of the Web Page So RSS Readers Auto-Detect Your Feed

After publishing an RSS feed it is important to let visitors know that the feed exists. Aggregators will automatically detect RSS on a website if you add a small bit of code in the header field of an HTML page.

[link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link/729596']);” href=”http://www.yourdomain.com/rss.xml”]

Be sure to replace http://www.yourdomain.com/rss.xml with the URL to the RSS feed and replace the brackets with “” greater than symbols.

5.) Display the Feed’s Content on a Website

Contents contained in an RSS feed can be added to a website, providing site visitors an alternative method for viewing the content. The information will also help increase search engine interest. Displaying the feed as HTML can be accomplished. Providing fresh content on a regular basis will encourage site visitors return.

Tutorial for Displaying Feeds – http://www.small-business-software.net/display-rss.htm

6.) Submit the Feed to RSS Directories and Search Engines

As a rapidly increasing number of content sources, new and old, migrate or add RSS as a key distribution channel, and as more people utilize RSS newsreaders and aggregators to keep themselves informed, the ability to maintain high exposure and visibility is gradually shifted from complete attention to major search engines and content optimization techniques to an increasing awareness of RSS feed directories and search tools.

In order to increase exposure of an RSS feed it should be submitted to RSS search engines and directories. This can be done manually. Just as you would submit the URL of a website or web page to a search engine you will need to submit the link of the actual feed located on your website to the RSS directories. There is a large list of RSS directories at http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-submission.htm . If you prefer to automate the submission process try RSS Submit at: http://www.dummysoftware.com/rsssubmit.html . An evaluation version is available.

Thinking of creating your own podcast but don’t have a clue about RSS, XML and iTunes tags? Then read on as this article will show you how to create a podcast using free online services.

Well, you should really be good at this already, but if your serious at doing a podcast show then you will need decent recording equipment such as a condensor mic, audio interface and pop shield. These will give your show more professional sound quality.

The hosting of MP3 files are important as you must judge whether your current web host is suitable for hosting large MP3′s. Will your web host ban you for hogging resources due to an influx of bandwidth usage? Check with your web host and if they will ban you then you must shop around for somewhere to host your files.

If you are running a podcast that uses free netlabel music then you can check out Archive.org as they allow the upload of open source audio.

Once you have sorted where your MP3′s are going to be hosted then its time to create the xml file that you are going to use for your podcast. There are plenty of online xml or podcast generators out there, but i prefer podcastblaster.com’s RSS feed generator.

Simply go to the website and click on “RSS Feed Generator”, create an account. Once you have logged into the RSS feed generator you can then “Edit Podcast Details”. Enter the name of your podcast in “Podcast Title”, the fill out the rest of the form with your website address in “website URL” and describe your podcast in “Description”.

The iTunes tags are a must if you want it to show correctly in the iTunes software, so fill in those details as well. Remember though, if you use the iTunes keywords tag then make sure that you dont use phrases such as “folk music” as they wont work. Just keep it to keywords and seperate each one with the comma. Your iTunes summary should be the same as your podcast description. Once you have filled in the information click on “Save”.

Now you need to create an episode, click on “add new episode”. Same as before, this page is really simple and self explanitory so put in your episode title and description. Some podcasts have seperate pages on their website for each episode, my advice is for you to do the same and when you have done this you can add the URL of your episode to “Episode URL” in this section.

Episode date/time is when the podcast episode has been published, it’s a very good idea to add this for maximum reader compatibility. To find out the file size of the mp3 (or any other file you may be using) simply right click on the copy on your hard drive and select “properties”. Again, edit your iTunes tags are these are a must for being included in iTunes. Now click on “Save”.

Once you are happy with the details you have saved into your podcast, you will now download the xml file by clicking on “Download Podcast Feed”. Once you have done this you can now upload it to your website.

Once the xml file is ready you now have a choice, get people to subscribe to the xml file itself or use another service such as Feedburner to do this. I personally use Feedburner as it gives me subscription info and it won’t have any affect on my websites bandwidth.

So if you want to use feedburner then go to googles feedburner website, log in using your google account. Look where it says “Burn a feed right this instant”, type in the url of your podcast feed and put a tick in the box next to “I am a podcaster”. Take the time to go around all of feedburners options and get familiar with them. If you have already put iTunes tags into your xml file then there is no need to use the iTunes tags options in Feedburner. Feedburner will also give you a URL to your podcast, take note of this as you will need it later.

Also, you might want to add the rss meta tag into the source code of your website as this allows easy subscription via the web browser. Google “rss meta tag”.

Now all you need to do is make sure everyone know how to subscribe, so start putting a link to your podcast onto your website. Also getting listed in Podcast directories is a must.

Now maybe in a years time you will be a podcasting star.

Internet marketing audio has come a long way in the last few years, mostly due to the increased speeds of processors and the ever-widening reach of broadband Internet marketing. And now, being able to tap into the huge audience using iPods, iPhones, iPads and similar devices has made using audio recordings a powerful affiliate marketing strategy as well, thanks to affiliate marketing podcasts.

Marketing podcasts, whether for use in affiliate marketing or any other online marketing, is simply good, solid content delivered in an audio format – usually MP3 files. These can range from simply reading your articles or blog posts and recording your rendition on your computer to full-blown audio productions with audio overlays, background music, lead-ins and exits, etc. To illustrate the point, think of the old radio news bulletins at one end of the spectrum and the old radio dramas at the other end. If you’re old enough to remember radio shows like the Green Hornet, The Shadow, etc then you’ll recall they used voice, music, sound effects and more to put together each production.

And while that took a professional studio and a great number of people to produce in those days, now your affiliate marketing podcasts can feature all that and a lot more just using today’s audio editing software and a few commercial sound files from any number of sources. Music tracks, sound effects collections and all the software you’ll ever need are all available online, and a bit of searching will reveal a lot of these resources that can be downloaded for free – even your production software for basic jobs!

But when you start affiliate marketing, or at least when you first incorporate podcasting into your affiliate marketing mix, keep your audios simple and easy to understand. Aim for 3 – 5 minutes in length at first, as this gives you sufficient time to deliver solid content without being long enough to create huge files that may need special handling. Without delving overly into the audio format specifications, it’s enough to say you want to render your audios in MP3 format using 16-bit recording at 44.1 Khz – your software will have these settings available, so just choose those when you come to those options.

Once you’ve created and uploaded your affiliate marketing podcasts to your hosting account, there are two common ways to make them available to your target market. The first, and easiest at first, is to use them on your affiliate marketing blogs, either with the text version of the article or with a summary of what the podcast is about. There are a variety of plugins for you blog to enable podcasting, so look for one that also creates the podcast RSS feed for you as well.

If you’re more advanced or just technically-inclined, you can also embed the audios anywhere you like on your blogs, static web pages, etc, and then create your own RSS feed for them in the established .XML file format. Details on the exact format for building your own podcast feeds can be found at iTunes and other podcast directories.

When you’ve created your affiliate marketing podcasts and your audio feed, it’s time to submit that feed to the major podcast directories like iTunes, Podcast Alley and Podcast Ready. And once they’ve approved and listed your feed, there’s no need to update them with each additional podcast you add – they’ll check your feed at regular intervals to see if you’ve included any new podcasts since they last spidered the feed.

Now not only have you added Internet audio to your blogs as another method of content delivery, but you’ve expanded your potential affiliate marketing reach to include the millions of users at the podcast directories each month. Depending on the niche you’re affiliate marketing in, this could become a major and lucrative source of targeted traffic, so don’t skip using affiliate marketing podcasts starting today!

Marketing mentor and speaker Doug Champigny is a huge advocate of using Internet audio and video in your marketing mix, including using affiliate marketing podcasts to reach a wider audience than your competition is targeting. Doug is the author of the powerful guide to podcasting and video blogging your way to success as an online marketer, and makes his affiliate marketing podcast downloads available as a free feed.
An RSS feed, also known as a “news feed”, is a syndicated news feed in an XML format that you can subscribe to. A news feed reader, also known as a “news aggregator”, is software that lets you subscribe to RSS feeds. Organizations will trust their employees enough to let them subscribe to RSS feeds. Once you have an RSS Reader, you can subscribe to which ever feeds you want, and quickly flick through news items that interest you. Once installed, this software will automatically aggregate and display the RSS feeds to which you subscribe.

Accessing an RSS feed is just like podcasting, in that you subscribe to a feed.
Update your RSS file, and all the external sites that subscribe to your feed will be automatically updated. But already, a medical reporter could subscribe to an RSS feed and receive updates published to a health database. To subscribe to RSS feeds from USATODAY.com, simply select a content section of interest to you from the list provided on this page. Users select the rss feeds (content) they wish to subscribe. The URL you copied to your clipboard will be the location your RSS reader will require to subscribe to that feed. Use the URL that comes up to subscribe to an RSS feed of jobs in that category. The reader you choose will have instructions for how to subscribe to RSS feeds.
Reader
Using an RSS feed reader allows you to be alerted when new articles on the topics you’re interested in are available. PubMed RSS feeds will include citations retrieved by your PubMed searches since the last time you were connected to your RSS reader. Through the RSS reader, feeds from various sources can be scanned with the ability to access the complete content relating to any interesting feeds. To properly read the feed, you need an RSS reader. Then, you’ll need to follow the instructions for your specific News Reader in order to add the feed to your RSS list. Start RssReader and go to add( ) channel/feed and then paste (click right mouse button) the url and press ok. Add as many feeds to this free RSS reader as you want and use it as free news aggregator. The ranking lists and custom searches are available as RSS feeds that you can import into your news reader.
An RSS reader could use this hint to automatically set the polling interval for the RSS feed. Then, return to your RSS reader and follow the instructions for your particular reader for adding a new feed.
Content:
Using RSS, web content providers can easily create and disseminate feeds of data that include, for example, site links, site titles, and summaries. First of all, explore your content management system – it might already have an option to generate an RSS feed. The list below provides links to some example RSS feeds which utilise different forms of content. Content from RSS feeds can be easily repurposed allowing, for example, cross searching of a number of different feeds at once. The difference between RSS feeds and podcast feeds is that you receive text content instead of audio content. After subscribing to an RSS feed, you will be notified when new content is available without having to visit the web site. Using RSS, Web content providers can easily create and disseminate feeds of data that include, for example, news links, headlines, and summaries. This will also give them a starting point for RSS feeds for their content. All the RSS 1.0 feeds contain full article text as well as comments and related content on other sites. Developers can quickly write RSS feeds and publish content in record time. Web:
Many aggregators are separate, “stand-alone” programs such as those listed above; other services let you add RSS feeds to a web page. The next few sections describe the state of your RSS feed as a Web document. The problems occur when software developers write bad code to publish and pull RSS feeds from the Web. This publication is transitioning from RSS feed to the more generic nickname webfeed. Blog Navigator integrates with various RSS and Internet search engines which enables you to gather webfeed results based on custom search keywords. or your favorite feed aggregator, or incorporate the RSS data into your own web site or client application. Many aggregators are separate, “stand-alone” programs such as those listed above; other services will let you add RSS feeds to a Web page.
Site:
Another thing RSS lets you do is put Monitor headlines on your site, which update themselves automatically when the RSS feeds update. The XML logo is currently in use across the Internet to indicate to users that RSS feeds are available from the site. related to data about a number of projects, or the SourceForge.net site itself) and project-specific RSS feeds. Or can RSS Feed automatically give me a nudge that something has turned up at a particular site. Formatting the feed for your site One good thing about RSS is that it has no formatting whatsoever.
Software:
It is even possible to download RSS feeds to an iPod using software such as iPod Agent. This is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added to them. However, the software doesn’t support RSS feeds that require authorization. But the software doesn’t stop there. The software is pre-configured with dozens of feeds, so you can unleash the power of RSS right away.
Most folks would be familiar with what podcasting is. It is process of syndicated distribution of audio, video or digital media files over internet. They can be downloaded on devices like computers, iPods or MP3 players etc. The idea behind downloading the file is to reach out for the podcast (and hence the information) whenever they are wished to be accessed – without having to get connected to the web.

The most advantageous part of downloading a podcast is that once you subscribe to the feed available in the website, latest updates of the same too gets sent to your device/s automatically. This is achieved by means of podcasting software better known as an ‘aggregator’ which periodically checks in for the latest updates and the same can be played on an audio/video player or any supportive software.

In a similar way, technology enthusiasts can enjoy faster updates on the latest in technology. Technology news – referring to a plethora of subjects ranging from newly introduced cell phones to an exclusively updated laptop; software; or latest game, can easily be availed via technology podcasts.

The most important advantage of a podcast is that every time you want to take a peek about latest technology introduced, you do not need to get connected to the web or switch on the television news channel: things are delivered right their inside into your kitty.

The podcast news downloads are available daily, weekly, monthly or on annual basis depending upon the requirements and specifications of the subscribers. A podcast directory makes available podcasts on various topics which can be chosen categorically. All you need are some cool software (to edit, organize and compress a file to be shared), a microphone and internet connection.

The enormous benefits of podcasting have made the process popular in the sphere of education. Students download podcasts of recorded lessons and it serves as an effective tool for fostering communication with faculties. Technology podcasts helps you get opinion of technology experts who share their ideas along with workshop training whenever required. Technology enthusiasts download podcasts news to upgrade themselves with latest technology reviews available at podcast news websites.
